Custom Bottle MOQ and Tooling: What It Actually Costs
Two numbers decide whether a custom bottle project is viable: the minimum order quantity and the tooling cost. Both are smaller than most buyers expect, provided the shape already exists.
A custom bottle does not have to mean a new mould. With 3,000+ moulds on the shelf, most briefs are already covered — the work is finding the closest one and changing decoration, not cutting steel.
Here is the honest arithmetic, including the cases where a new mould is the wrong answer.
When You Do Not Need a Mould
If your product fits a standard Boston round, a disc-top bottle or a straight-sided jar, the mould already exists somewhere in Shantou — possibly in our rack. Send a photo or a sample and we check before quoting tooling. This is the difference between a 25-day project and a 45-day one.
When a New Mould Is Worth It
A new mould makes sense when the shape is the brand — a distinctive silhouette, an unusual neck, a handle, a square that stacks better than anything stock. It stops making sense when the only change is colour or print: those are decoration, not tooling.
Mould ownership and exclusivity should be agreed in writing before the first payment. Ours is: the tooling is paid by the customer and reserved for that customer's use.
The Real Cost of a Small First Order
A 1,000 pc trial at 1,000 pcs MOQ is not the cheapest unit price you will ever see — it is the cheapest way to find out whether the pack survives your filling line. Buyers who skip it usually pay for the lesson in a rejected container.
Questions We Get on This
Can I order less than 1,000 pcs?
On stock colours, sometimes yes — ask. On custom colour or print, 1,000 pcs is the practical minimum because of set-up time on the line.
Who owns the mould?
The customer who pays for it, and it is reserved for their use. This is agreed in writing before production.
Can you copy a competitor's bottle?
We can match a shape you own or have the right to use. We do not copy a protected design — if the shape is registered, we will say so.
How long from first email to shipped order?
Typically 45–60 days: 5 days for DFM and quotation, 25 days for T1 samples, 25–35 days for production.
