What Is the Lead Time for Custom Plastic Bottles From China?
Samples in 7 days from a stock mould; production 25–35 days after sample approval; add 15–20 days if new tooling is needed. Sea freight adds about 30–35 days to the US and 30–40 to Europe.
What Runs in Parallel
Artwork
Artwork approval is the usual delay, and it sits with the customer. Send it at sample stage so it runs in parallel.
Colour Matching
A physical colour standard takes 3–5 days; matching to a Pantone number is faster and less exact.
Inspection and Booking
Third-party inspection and container booking add 3–7 days after production that most timelines forget.
The Timeline, Step by Step
Day 0: brief with capacity, neck, material, quantity and market. Day 1–2: specification and quotation. Day 3–7: sample from the production mould, not a showroom piece. Day 7–10: sample approval and deposit. Day 10–45: production, 25–35 days depending on the line. Day 45+: inspection, packing, shipment.
If the shape is new, insert 15–20 days for tooling before sampling.
What Actually Delays an Order
Three things, in order: artwork approval (not production), a colour that has to be matched to a physical standard, and Chinese New Year. Artwork sits with the customer, so the 25–35 day clock usually starts later than people plan.
We ask for the artwork at the sample stage so the two run in parallel.
Shipping After Production
Sea freight to the US west coast is about 30–35 days door to door; to Europe about 30–40. Express and air are possible for samples and small batches but not for 10,000 bottles.
FOB Shantou is the default term; EXW and CIF are quoted on request.
How to Plan a Launch Date
Work backwards: retail shelf date minus 35 days freight minus 35 days production minus 10 days sample and approval. That is a 12-week runway from brief to shelf. Brands that start 8 weeks out usually pay for air freight or miss the date.
The Three Queues
Moulding, decoration and assembly run in sequence, and each has its own queue. A stock bottle with no decoration can leave in three weeks; a metallised cap can add ten days on its own.
Artwork approval is the delay that is in the buyer's hands. A proof that comes back in two days instead of ten shortens the project more than any factory promise.
Frequently Asked
How long does production take?
25–35 days after sample approval for stock moulds; add 15–20 days for new tooling.
How fast are samples?
7 days from an existing mould. A new shape needs the mould first, so 25–30 days in total.
How long is shipping to the US or EU?
About 30–35 days to the US west coast and 30–40 to Europe by sea.
Can I book a slot?
Yes, once the deposit is in and the artwork is approved.
What about Chinese New Year?
Add two to three weeks either side; the factory closes and the queue rebuilds.
