Plastic Bottle Weight Calculator: Grams, Resin and Cost Per 10,000

Enter capacity, diameter, height, wall and material; the calculator estimates bottle weight in grams and the resin needed for 10,000 pieces.

Designed by Joe Joo · 8PCK, Shantou

You have a bottle drawing. You need the grams.

Resin is priced by the kilogram: 2 g on a 28 g bottle is 7 % of the material cost, and 80 kg of resin across a container.

    How it is calculated

The Formula, the Assumptions, and Where It Stops

    1. Side wall = π × D × H × t.
    2. Base = π × (D/2)² × t × 1.6 (the base is thicker than the wall).
    3. Shoulder = π × D × min(D/2, 30) × t × 0.8.
    4. Mass = total volume × density (PET 1.34, HDPE 0.95, PP 0.90, PETG 1.27 g/cm³).

Assumptions. A smooth body with no ribs, handle or thick collar; those add 5–15 %, which is why the result is quoted ±10 %.

Standards we work to. ISO 9001:2015 (quality system, cert PCC85724Q01277R1S) · EU 10/2011 (plastic food-contact, migration report E2032) · RoHS (PE B-R01612E2033, PET B-R201133464) · ISO 4180 (packaging for transport). The calculator is a planning tool: the approved drawing and the migration report decide the final specification.

Where it does not apply. It is an estimate for planning. The real weight comes from the drawing and a trial mould.

    H O t H = height · O = diameter · t = wall
The three numbers the formula uses: height, diameter and wall.

    Worked examples

Wall, diameter and height decide the gram weight; the gram weight decides the price. Same formula as the calculator.

Why the Weight Matters More Than the Wall

Resin is priced by the kilogram, so a 2 g difference on a 28 g bottle is 7 % of the material cost — and on a 40,000-piece container it is 80 kg of resin. Weight is also what the container payload and the pallet limits are calculated from.

    What This Estimate Cannot See

Neck finish, handle, ribs and any thick section at the base. Those add 5–15 %, so treat the number as a planning figure and confirm against a sample.

    Questions About This Tool

How much does a 500 ml PET bottle weigh?

Around 25–30 g at 0.55 mm wall; heavier with a pump collar or thick base.

How does rPET change the weight?

Not at all — same density; only the resin cost and colour change.

Is thinner always lower in unit cost?

lower in unit cost in resin, more expensive in returns: below 0.5 mm the shoulder flexes and the pump draws air.
