1 L Bottles: Detergent, Juice and the Wide-Mouth Problem
1 L is a household size first and a cosmetic size second: detergent, fabric softener, juice and syrup. The neck widens, the wall thickens, and the closure becomes a pouring device.
At 1 L the pack stops being a cosmetic bottle and becomes a container: pouring, refilling and stacking matter more than shelf presence.
The free Bottle Spec Checker tests whether your neck fits the closure and whether the wall survives a pump stroke.

Wide Mouth or Narrow
A 38 mm neck fills faster and pours a thick product; a 28/410 keeps the standard pump and trigger ecosystem. Detergent usually goes 38 mm, juice 28/410 or 38 mm depending on the line.
38 mm
Faster filling, easier pouring for thick liquids.
28/410
Fits standard triggers and pumps; keeps the closure catalogue small.
Material Follows the Product
HDPE for detergent and chemicals; PET for juice and clear liquids, with the caveat that hot fill distorts standard PET.
Handling and Stacking
A full 1 L weighs over a kilogram. The base needs a flat, reinforced design or cases sag in a pallet stack — a common cause of returns.
Where This Size Fails
At 1 L the pack is a container before it is a brand object. Failures come from the shoulder, the base and the closure — in that order.
Shoulder Flex
A full bottle puts load on the shoulder; below 0.65 mm a pump stroke deforms it and draws air.
Base Sag
A flat, reinforced base is needed or cases sag in a pallet stack over weeks.
Closure Mismatch
38 mm and 38-400 are not the same specification; confirm the thread on the drawing.
What to Send in a Brief
Capacity (1 L), product type, neck, closure, and whether the pack ships as a retail unit or a refill. Those answers decide resin, wall and base.
1 L in PET, HDPE and Clear: Which One You Are Actually Buying
The 1 L size is moulded in more than one resin, and the resin decides what the pack can carry. Clear PET for a product that has to be seen; HDPE where the formula is opaque or attacks PET; PETG when the wall has to look thick like glass.
750 ml is the step down — the neck is usually shared, which is why one closure range covers the whole family. If you are switching between 1 L and 750 ml, keep the neck the same and only the body changes.
Clear PET
The default for shampoo, water and anything sold on colour; light, recyclable, food-grade.
HDPE
Opaque, cheap, and resistant to surfactants — the choice for detergent and chemicals.
PETG
Thicker wall, closer to glass; costs 20–30 % more per unit.
Questions We Get on This
What is a 1 L bottle used for?
Detergent, fabric softener, juice, syrup and refill formats.
What neck does a 1 L bottle use?
38 mm for detergent and thick liquids; 28/410 when a standard trigger or pump is needed.
PET or HDPE at 1 L?
HDPE for detergent and chemicals; PET for clear juice, cold fill only.
What is the MOQ?
1,000 pcs per colour; tooling for a new handle or base adds cost.
What is the MOQ for a 1 L bottle?
1,000 pcs per colour on existing moulds.
Can it take a standard pump?
At 1 L usually not — 38 mm necks take screw or measuring caps, not 28/410 pumps.
Is the base reinforced?
Specify it: a full bottle at this size can sag in a pallet stack.
Can I get the 1 L in clear and in white?
Yes — same mould, different resin or masterbatch; the neck stays identical so closures carry over.
