50 ml Bottles: the Sample Size That Decides Reorders

50 ml is the smallest size most brands sell, and the one with the highest cost per ml. The bottle is low-cost; the closure, the filling and the carton are not.

A 50 ml bottle is a sample, a travel size or a single-serve. It is also where unit economics get awkward: the bottle costs cents, but the cap, the label and the filling cost as much as a 250 ml line.

This page covers what fits a 50 ml, what it costs, and why the closure usually decides the reorder.

What Fits on a 50 ml Bottle

A 50 ml body can take several closures, and the neck decides which. 18/410 covers droppers and small sprayers; 20/410 covers fine mist and flip-tops; 24/410 is unusual at this size and makes the bottle look top-heavy.

18/410

Droppers, small sprayers, sample serums.

20/410

Flip-top, disc-top, fine mist; the travel/sample standard.

24/410

Possible but visually heavy; used where a standard pump is required.

Why the Closure Decides the Reorder

A sample bottle that leaks in a bag is not reordered. The two failures are a flip-top with a shallow spigot and a dropper collar that does not match the thread height.

For a 50 ml travel pack, a disc-top with a silicone valve is usually the safest choice; for a serum sample, a push-button dropper.

Cost per Unit at 50 ml

Resin is a small share at this size — often under a third of the unit price. The closure, the label and the packing labour dominate.

That is why the price difference between two 50 ml quotes is almost never the bottle: it is the cap, the decoration and the carton.

Where This Size Fails

A 50 ml pack is bought for samples, travel and serums, and almost every complaint traces to a closure that leaks in a bag. The bottle is rarely the problem; the interface is.

The Wall Thickness Floor

Below 0.45 mm a bottle survives a handbag and not a checked case; 0.5 mm is the practical floor for anything that travels.

The Closure Thread

A 410 closure on a 415 neck threads on and weeps. Confirm the thread code, not the diameter.

The Label Edge

Humidity and abrasion lift a paper label within days. Synthetic label or silkscreen.

What to Send in a Brief

Capacity (50 ml), neck, closure type, quantity and whether the pack travels. Those five answers are enough to quote with packing data, and they decide the wall and the liner before a sample is made.

50 ml in PET, HDPE and Clear: Which One You Are Actually Buying

The 50 ml size is moulded in more than one resin, and the resin decides what the pack can carry. Clear PET for a product that has to be seen; HDPE where the formula is opaque or attacks PET; PETG when the wall has to look thick like glass.

10 ml and 15 ml are the same family — the neck is usually shared, which is why one closure range covers the whole family. If you are switching between 50 ml and 15 ml, keep the neck the same and only the body changes.

Clear PET

The default for shampoo, water and anything sold on colour; light, recyclable, food-grade.

HDPE

Opaque, cheap, and resistant to surfactants — the choice for detergent and chemicals.

PETG

Thicker wall, closer to glass; costs 20–30 % more per unit.

Questions We Get on This

What is a 50 ml bottle used for?

Samples, travel sizes, serums, hand sanitizer and single-serve liquids.

What neck does a 50 ml bottle have?

18/410 or 20/410 typically; 24/410 exists but looks heavy at this size.

Why is 50 ml so expensive per ml?

The closure, label and filling cost are similar to a larger bottle, so they dominate the unit price.

What is the MOQ?

1,000 pcs per colour.

What is the MOQ for a 50 ml bottle?

1,000 pcs per colour on existing moulds.

Can the 50 ml bottle travel?

Yes with a 0.5 mm wall and a closure with a deep spigot or a valve; a thin wall cracks in a case.

Which closure should I choose?

Flip or disc top for thin liquids, pump for lotion, dropper for serum — the neck decides what fits.

Can I get the 50 ml in clear and in white?

Yes — same mould, different resin or masterbatch; the neck stays identical so closures carry over.
