Black Bottles: Premium Look, Recycling Problem

Black is the most requested premium colour in cosmetics and the worst colour for recycling: carbon black is invisible to near-infrared sorting.

A black bottle reads premium and hides the fill level. The catch is sorting: standard carbon black cannot be detected by the optical sorters used in recycling.

Why Black Is a Problem

Near-infrared sorting cannot see carbon black, so a black bottle falls out of the stream. Some markets now restrict black plastic in specific applications.

Carbon Black

lowest unit cost, invisible to sorting.

Detectable Black

A different pigment that sorters can see; costs more and needs confirming with the recycler.

What to Do if the Brand Wants Black

Three routes: keep black and make no recyclability claim; use a deep green or brown that reads black; or specify a detectable black.

Matte or Gloss

Matte black shows fingerprints; gloss shows scratches. A soft-touch matte is the usual compromise.

How to Specify It

What separates a good black pigment order from a bad one is the sample and the standard, not the catalogue photo.

Ask for Two Batches

Batch-to-batch variation is the usual complaint; compare two physical samples, not photos.

State the Light

Look at the sample under shop lighting, not office lighting.

Write the Acceptance

A visual standard plus a physical master sample is what a factory can actually match.

What It Does to the Claim

Any black pigment changes what the pack can claim about recycling. Decide the claim before the finish, not after.

Questions We Get on This

Can black bottles be recycled?

Poorly: carbon black is invisible to near-infrared sorting, so most facilities cannot separate it.

What is detectable black?

A pigment that sorting equipment can see; confirm with the recycler, not the pigment supplier.

Is black more expensive?

The masterbatch costs a little more; the real cost is the recycling claim.

What is the MOQ?

1,000 pcs per colour.

Does black pigment change the MOQ?

Usually yes — most finishes start at 1,000 or 3,000 pcs; check before designing the range.

Can I see a sample first?

Yes: 7 days on stock moulds, with the finish applied.

Does it affect recycling?

Often — coatings and pigments can put the pack outside the standard stream.
