PPWR Has Been Live for Ten Weeks: What It Changes in a Bottle Spec

The EU packaging regulation (2025/40) replaced the 1994 directive on 12 August 2026. For a buyer ordering bottles from Asia, it moves four things in the specification — and one of them is a mould decision.

What Changed

Ten weeks into the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, the practical questions from European buyers have settled into four, and none of them is about the bottle's shape.

The first is material. A regulation that applies directly in every member state, without being transposed, ends the era of reading the directive differently in Paris and in Milan. Mono-material packs are easier to defend in a recyclability assessment than a bottle with a PP collar on a PET body, and buyers are now asking for the collar to be the same polymer as the body — which is a mould question, not a purchasing one.

What It Means for Buyers

The second is recycled content. rPET is available in Shantou, and the constraint is not supply but colour: post-consumer rPET runs slightly yellow, so a clear bottle specified at 30% rPET will not match a virgin sample. If the brand needs a clean transparent look, the recycled content has to go into an opaque or a coloured pack, and that decision lands before the tool is cut.

The third is the closure. Tethering and single-use reduction rules push caps toward designs that stay attached. A tethered cap needs a specific neck finish and a hinge that survives repeated opening; fitting one to an existing 24/410 body usually works, but the tool may need a thread change.

What to Ask a Supplier

The fourth is evidence. Extended producer responsibility fees are increasingly modulated by design, and the buyer has to document what the pack is made of and whether it can be recycled. That documentation starts with the factory, which is why we now send a material declaration with the quotation rather than on request.

None of this makes a stock mould obsolete. It does mean the specification conversation has moved earlier: polymer, rPET share, closure family and decoration are now decided before the drawing, not after the sample. Buyers who bring those four answers get a quotation in a day; buyers who leave them open get a question back.
